The new fall fundraiser, aka “I ª 2 Read-A-Thon”, supporting the 2010-2011 Educational Opportunity Grants, was a HUGE success. The inaugural Read-A-Thon created a buzz about reading. The kids at Rogers/Binford read a combined 401,755 minutes, averaging 45 minutes day/per student (from those who turned in a tracking form). Thanks to all the kids’ hard work and the generosity of family, friends, and our community sponsors (who provided bookmarks). Rogers/Binford raised an all time record, $30,151. WOW!! This equates to an average of $75 per student who turned in a form, and and average of $35 per student from the total enrollment. We had 45% participation this year. We hope to improve our participation next year and build on learning and experience from this ‘test’ year.

The reading marathon ended with Celebration Day which included individual class parties, an assembly at each school with a character parade and surprise visit from Greg, The Wimpy Kid (aka Mr. Childers / Mr. Conrad) and his mom, Susan (aka Kelly King).

Congratulations to our 34 Super Star winners who made extraordinary effort in reading or fundraising. These Super Stars were the Top 2 readers per grade level, and Top 20 fundraisers. A giant thank you to these students who pushed far beyond the average to earn a limo ride to see a movie (based on a book) in the theatre.

Sample email

Here is a sample of an email written by two of our students, Kim and Erik Appel. Feel free to use this as a template for your own personal email to send to friends and family.

Thanks Kim & Erik!

Dear ______________,

We are doing a fundraiser for our school by reading. We were hoping that you could sponsor us by either a pledge or an amount per minute (for example, you could pledge $10 or you could pledge $0.01 per minute). The fundraiser started 10-2-09 and ends 10-25-09. Kim so far has read 510 minutes and Erik has read 330 minutes. We hope that you can pledge some money for each of us soon and if you do we will tell you what amount you owe us if you do per minute and when to send the money to us. Also, 100% of the money goes to our school, no companies are doing this with us so hopefully we get some nice new stuff for our school!

Thanks a lot!
Kim and Erik

4 Steps to Our Read-A-Thon:

1. Get Sponsors. Ask your family, friends and neighbors to pledge a certain amount of money for every minute you read or for a set amount. Fill in your sponsors’ names and pledges on the pledge sheet on the back of this page. Contact only people you know to sponsor your reading.

2. READ! All reading counts, whether you are reading by yourself, reading to someone else, or having someone read to you. Reading time during school DOES NOT COUNT. Read AS MUCH AS YOU CAN before or after school. Track your minutes and record them on the TRACK YOUR READING TIME sheet.

3. Tally On Sunday, October 25th tally up your Total Minutes Read and calculate the TOTAL DUE for each sponsor. Submit your tracking form to your teacher on MONDAY, OCTOBER 26TH.

4. Collect From Monday, October 26 to Monday, November
2 collect the money from your sponsors. Checks should be made payable to ROGERS/BINFORD. Pledges are 100% tax deductible. Receipts available.
Hand in your Pledge Forms and money on Monday, November 2nd.
